Joshua would like to be an IT assistant and whilst he has excellent IT qualifications and work ethic, Joshua doesn’t have the required mathematics qualification that this role asks for.
Joshua came to the Youth Hub to access support with understanding his neurodiversity, locating the appropriate support for mental health, interview skills, application processes and helping him to get onto the correct career path.
We focused on setting Joshua up with a strong CV and cover letter to enable him to apply for roles outside of sessions easier. We then focused session time on the lengthier applications so we could formulate answers to questions together. Alongside this, we attempted to search for IT apprentice roles. We kept hitting a wall with the requirement for Maths Level 2.
As Joshua was keen to work as quickly as possible, we focused on getting him a temporary part-time job that would allow him to work towards his required qualifications on the side. Joshua was incredibly proactive with this and ended up getting a cleaning role within only 7 weeks of the programme.
We switched to support sessions and during this time, we have focused on getting Joshua referred for his Autism diagnosis, and locating the correct support for his mental health. Joshua is now receiving support for this which he is finding useful!
We also found the PET-XI programme, where Joshua could complete some key courses to increase his employability skills. Joshua has recently completed his second course with PET-XI and is going to begin on multiply in the coming months which should help him to gain the needed maths qualifications to allow us to continue applying for IT internships!
We also assisted Joshua to complete his Access to Work application which should allow us to continue working with Joshua to support him in his current role.
